Besides being a professional linguist, I am an amateur guitarist focusing on classical guitar and occasionally dabbling in electric and acoustic guitar. Other than playing the classics, I enjoy writing original pieces and arrangements, some of which are featured on the YouTube music channel that I started with my wife Evi during the 2020–2022 lockdowns. Some of the videos we published are featured below.
Originals
Here are some of my (still few) originals, with more in the works.
Pelog Lullaby
This is a little lullaby I wrote more or less spontaneously in under an hour after being suddenly inspired while noodling around the pelog scale during warm-up one day.
Dear Best Friend
I can only take credit for the instrumentation on that one. My wife and our friend hermano wrote the lyrics and vocals, after which I came up with the rest.
Among the Reeds
This is a song I wrote a few years ago as an ode to the Dreisam, a river that has been a constant companion to me for more than half of my life. We haven’t managed to record it yet but will do so soon. Here are the lyrics as a teaser:
Standing by the quiet river,
Watching as the stream burbles by me feet.
Pondering the water’s course, from lofty source to distant shores.
As the river flows, my worries and my woes,
Wash away from me as far’s the eye can see
Float then sink aground where stones and fish abound
Leaving me as free and careless as can be
Among the reeds,
Where I dwell by Earth’s artery
And feel the pulse of Life run gently to the sea
List’ning to the plash, how soothing
Contemplating wildlife surrounding me:
Herons standing still like stone to catch their dish of skittish fish.
As the mallards fly, and land upon the stream
Ravens rinse their wings in sunset’s golden gleam
Clouds of midges hang suspended in a beam
While the water lulls me to a waking dream
Among the reeds,
Where I dwell by Earth’s artery
And feel the pulse of Life run gently to the sea
Sun is setting fast
Nothing forever lasts
Summer’s end is nigh
As days go by and by
Leaves are breaking free
From the canopy
Winter’s certain creep
Lulls Nature to sleep
Springs will come along
Rivers will flow on
Long after I’m gone

Kissing You
This cover of the 1997 hit by Des’ree and Timothy Atack, featured in Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, is our most watched video by far.
Tuyo
This song by Rodrigo Amarante may be the best intro theme to any series!
Ballad of the Wind Fish
“If I was a sea gull, I would fly as far as I could! I would fly to far away places and sing for many people! … If I wish to the Wind Fish, I wonder if my dream will come true.”
This is my arrangement of “The Ballad of the Wind Fish” from the 1993 video game The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening for the Nintendo Game Boy (later re-released for the Nintendo Game Boy Color in 1998 and remade for the Nintendo Switch in 2019). The game’s music was composed by Kazumi Totaka, Minako Hamano, and Kozue Ishikawa.
Indonesian music
Evi being a wonderful singer from Indonesia, it is only logical that she should sing the songs of her people.
Kala Sang Surya Tenggelam
This 1996 song by Chrisye was recently featured in the Indonesian Netflix series Gadis Kretek.
Bimbang
This song by Melly Goeslaw is part of the oroginal soundtrack of the Indonesian film Ada Apa Dengan Cinta. As a little intro, Evi reads the poem “Aku” by Chairil Anwar.
Panon Hideung
We thought this was the most Sundanese song ever, but a little research quickly revealed that it is originally a well-known Russian romance folk song. The first half is my arrangement, sticking to a more traditional pentatonic scale of Sundanese music, before Evi’s former school buddy Budi adds a samba flavour.
Brazilian music
Evi and I both share a love for Brazilian music, which has a lot to offer beyond samba and bossa nova.
Mas que nada
The younger ones may only know this song from the Black Eyed Peas, but this song was originally written and released by Jorge Ben. Outside of Brazil, the cover version by Sérgio Mendes with his band Brasil ‘66 may be the most well known version.
Modihna
We play two pieces of the same name, “Modinha”, the first one by Antonio Carlos Jobim (with lyrics by Vinicius de Moraes), the second one by Heitor Villa-Lobos (Seresta no. 5, with lyrics by Manduca Pía).
A modinha is a type of Brazilian sentimental love song, so it is not surprising to have several songs with this title. We like both pieces so much that we couldn’t pick one, so we decided to play them both, back to back. Given the influence that the work of Villa-Lobos had on Jobim’s music, we thought it was a fitting combination.
Melodia sentimental
Saying that I adore the music of Villa-Lobos may be an understatement. This is one of his most famous pieces from the orchestral work “Floresta do Amazonas” (Forest of the Amazon), with lyrics by Dora Vasconcelos. I based my guitar part on Carlos Barbosa-Lima’s arrangement of the piece.
Berimbau
This is our rendition of the song “Berimbau” by Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell with lyrics by the poet Vinícius de Moraes. The berimbau is a single-string percussion instrument that is central to the Afro-Brazilian martial art capoeira. In the beginning, I imitate the sound of the berimbau by employing a guitar technique called tabalet, whereby two strings are twisted before being played, yielding a percussive sound.
Perlen des deutschen Liedguts
This is my ongoing collection of arrangements Perlen des deutschen Liedguts im frühen 21. Jahrhundert für die klassische Gitarre arrangiert (loosely translated as “Precious gems from the early 21st century German song repertoire arranged for classical guitar”). More to come.
Atemlos durch die Nacht
This is my waltz arrangement of Helene Fischer’s 2013 hit “Atemlos durch die Nacht”.
Schatz, ich kann nicht mehr warten
Here I play my habanera and tango arrangement of Mördan’s viral rap hit “Schatz, ich kann nicht mehr warten” (“Darling, I can’t wait any longer”), which took the German-speaking portion of the internet by storm in 2011.
